Adventure
|
Adventure games usually involve taking a player through a rich, detailed world - usually involving quests and puzzles. It's sort of like RPG's, but there isn't much emphasis on charecter stats and whatnot.

Arcade
|
The types of games that fall into this category are typically pinball games, side-scrollers, and other fairly simple games.

RPG
|
Role Playing Games (RPG) are typically very rich in plot and story - with compelling charecters and a lot of charecter building (Such as stats). Many now are being ported to multiplayer-only, which allows for huge worlds inhabited by real players.

Shooters
|
Typically in first person, shooters are usually simple in their basic premise - shoot anything and everything that moves. They usually have great graphics, with 'lots of enemies and guns to play around with.

Simulations
|
Take it to the skies, and even space, in this type of genre. Flight sims are considered one of the most detailed games around, often mimicking real jets and fighters of the worlds fighters. A space sim is usually simplistic in control, but nevertheless lacking in epic battle with loads of gameplay.

Sports
|
You see it on TV, now play it on PC! Sports games are often rich in detail, and allow for a good degree of team interaction and customization.

Strategy
|
This type of genre allows for you to take control of entire armies to crush your opponent. Some being Real-Time, while others being Turn-Based. And as of recent, a new breed has been conceived - a mix of First Person action with a thinking mans concept.
