EverQuest has the distinction of being the first beta test I've participated in (and I've been in several) that I feel I
may end up regretting. The game is an incredible time sucker - if it weren't for my editor dragging me onto Battle.net to
play Brood War all night long, I'd be spending many more sleepless nights wandering about Norrath, fighting creatures,
gaining power, and marveling at the eye-candy the game offers. For the first time ever, 989 Studios and Verant
Interactive may have come up with a pay-to-play game that will get me so drawn into it that I'll gladly shell out the
monthly fee to get my fix.
EverQuest is set to begin hitting stores March 16th, 1999, and while I haven't been able to find a definite suggested
retail price, it will probably run around $45, which will include one free month of play (more than enough to get you
hooked). Monthly pricing has JUST been announced though, and the game will run $9.89 per month paid monthly, $25.89 for 3
months at a time, or $49.89 for a 6 month chunk of time.
EverQuest has the potential to be quite possibly the best online role playing game yet and is a tremendous step in a
promising direction for the genre. Due to its 3D graphics and first person default view, the game may have a large appeal
to first person shooter fans and could even compete with the new games coming out by the gurus of the shooter, Carmack and
Romero.
