The RPG triumph of 1997, Interplay's Fallout, has a much anticipated sequel in the works. Fallout 2 is taking over where Fallout left off, 50 years after the first. Life a generation after a massive nuclear holocaust was shown to be gritty, crude, dangerous, and above all, surprisingly fun in 1997's Fallout. The first Fallout is the finest RPG of 1997 and arguably, of all time. Now in Fallout 2, yet another generation has passed and people are beginning to exit their vaults and build small villages and reclaim the barren and hostile earth. The sequel is going to improve on many elements of the first, but without the reengineering of the engine.

The game itself is going to contain many missions of vast importance to humanity, as well as some wacky subplots to add to the realism and harshness of a post apocalyptic world. You may be on a quest of vast importance, but the question remains: Do you have time to help a young villager find his lost dog, Smoke? Is it worth the risk? Is it worth the time? It's all up to you, but remember even the slightest decision can change the entire world. Your decisions as the hero or heroine of the game are the single most important elements to gameplay. They can influence character reputation, mission outcomes, as well as NPC reactions. In fact you create your own characters.

Since there are no real pre-set classes, you pick and choose your skills and attributes to make a finely tuned character to your liking who is best suited to the wastes. And once you're out in the harsh world, your actions influence the karma, reputation, and general alignment of your character. Good deeds will improve your standing with law-abiding citizens, while a serial killer attitude will improve your character's reputation with the scum, criminals, and cockroaches of the burnt wastes. Considering the extra amount of mutants in the wastes of Fallout 2, befriending a 6 foot talking cockroach with a rifle might not be such a bad idea.

But you begin the game as a naive primitive villager, and a direct descendant of the original hero of the first Fallout, and it's now your turn to fullfill your destiny... what is that destiny? Only you can decide. The world is a big one, over 50% larger than the first, and there are many, many more missions and subplots available, and some of them feature the toughest decisions yet. Will you eradicate a community of peaceful ghouls to save a village downstream? There are no easy choices, but life in the wastes is never easy and is filled with life and death situations.
