In 1992, Westwood created Dune 2, the first "real" real-time strategy game, and the masses saw that it was good. But lately, it seems like there's nothing new under the sun when it comes to fast-paced strategic action (Dune 2000, anyone?). Zono Inc. plans to change that trend with Metal Fatigue, a new strategy game with a few interesting twists.
The story is surprisingly complex, especially considering the genre of the game. It's set in the 23rd century, and mankind has discovered faster-than-light travel. While exploring the universe, humans come across the ruins of shattered planets destroyed by an alien race known as the Hedoth. Scout ships begin following the trail of devastation back towards its origin, and back on Earth, the three massive metanational "CorpoNations" start desperately increasing and improving their militaries, preparing for a fight with the Hedoth. Technology salvaged from Hedoth machines on the ruined planets dramatically speed the rate of scientific advance on Earth.

The scout ships finally reach the Hedoth home system, and the three CorpoNations have their fleets poised and ready for the biggest battle in Earth's history. The future equivalent of CNN is live on the scene as the scout ships approach the Hedoth homeworld, to discover... nothing. Nobody home. Just a few guard drones, and massive installations filled to the brim with incredible, fully operational Hedoth technology. Needless to say, the three CorpoNations rushed to the planet faster than a deepwater sailor to a brothel, eager to get their hands on the plentiful bounty within.
That's just the background story. The real plot centers around three brothers: Diego, Jonus, and Stefan Angelus. The three worked for Rimtech, one of the CorpoNations. Sent to the Hedoth planet as part of a reconnaissance team, they stumble across an ancient ruin guarded by one of the Hedoth drones. The drone attacks them, much fighting ensues, and as the battle rages, Jonus happens to find a Hedoth weapon lying around. He uses the weapon to destroy the drone, but then things get a bit nasty. The three brothers argue about what should be done with the weapon. Stefan is injured, and later rescued by the evil Mil-Agro CorpoNation. Jonus takes the weapon and defects to the mysterious Neuropa. Diego returns to Rimtech, and the game begins.
