We're afraid to play alone. We're also afraid of the dark. And clowns.

The different multiplayer modes you can find in Summoner are currently still under consideration, but the folks at Volition Inc. are pretty sure they're going to include an open adventure mode that won't have a relation to the story, but will allow adventurers to play with each other and gain levels/items. Each player would have a single character, and according to Shekar, they would be stored on Volition's "PXO" online gaming service.
How's the game sound so far? Pretty good, right? The only downside to the game that we've been able to locate is the complete absence of a flying monkey summoning spell. Shekar told us they were actually planning to include one, where Joseph would summon them from his "arse," but that the… oh fine, so I can't explain this well, lemme just show you what he said:
"Joseph did have a summoning where he could call for flying monkeys from his arse. But, we ran into legal problems with the people who own the right to The Wizard of Oz. They claimed that only they could use evil flying monkeys, so we decided to cut them altogether. We didn't think a long drawn out courtroom battle would really be worth it."
Sure, not "worth it." Ha! Apparently Volition Inc. doesn't know how important flying monkeys can be to a game and um… it's pretty obvious I'm alone in this demented pattern of thought, so maybe I ought to move on. Summoner is really going to set itself above the rest of the 3D RPGs soon to be released. Why? Well it sure has a lot going for it. It's set in a wholly unique world and populated with creatures and beings unlike those you're familiar with. The entire history of the world is also unique, so you can be sure to experience something completely new.
The talented artists putting together the 3D creatures and world are excellent when it comes to the little details. Instead of making a single "sword" for Jekhar to use, each sword you can find has it's own unique look. As Shekhar says, the gamer will have no "preconceived notions of what should happen in a game like this." The story is tied into the world's history and mythology, and that is also completely new. All of this makes for a world where the artists and writers have free reign of their imagination to do as they please, and as you can tell by the screenshots… what pleases them is sure to please most gamers too. If you're still doubtful about why this game is going to rock as much as I'm sure it will, you can head on over to the earlier interview I did with the game's producer Anoop Shekar, right here on 3D News, or go on over to the official Summoner site for additional game information.
