BioWare must like you. What did you do to deserve this splendid graphics engine?
|
I'd say you were all good paying customers so now BioWare made and is using a fabulous new 3D Engine, Omen, in MDK 2… but I think BioWare really cares about us. The Omen Engine is quite versatile, and perfectly capable of creating odd alien structures made to fit the odd alien world you will traverse throughout the game. This Engine supports arbitrary polygon environments that can feature large animated segments. Um… well it sounds cool. What does it mean? I'd try and explain but it would come out all clumsy and awkward. What I do know, is this engine is going to allow for strangely unique (yes, strange and unique) environments. They're being designed to make you feel like part of an "active world." Although it will not be "real" in the sense you're visiting completely un-Earth-like places, it will still have aliens that go about their business until you show up, and this should enhance the feeling of being in a living area.
A Dreamcast version is in the works also. While the PC MDK 2 will support resolutions up to 1600x1200 at 32-bit color depth, the Dreamcast will be limited to 640x480. In this respect, we will be able to laugh at Dreamcast users for this, and ignore any logical rebuttal they have to offer. One of the downsides to the Dreamcast port will be the way saves work. The game can be saved only in between whole levels on the Dreamcast, so checkpoints will need to be used to keep anyone from replaying the difficult parts. Hey, it beats playing through the entire game in a single sitting! Lucky PC junkies will be able to save anywhere, so the saving issue is nothing to worry about.
The enemy AI plans on being impressive as well, but not through the newest and most advanced means. The enemies will have their basic AI that allows for combat and defense, flatulence (really) and very evil looks… but it is the scripting that will allow the enemies to keep you on your toes (Note: That only literally occurs when an enemy points at your feet and screams, "DANCE!" This may or may not actually occur in the game). The scripting will have enemies react to different situations in various manners. No Conehead with telekinetic flatulent powers is going to attack you with his massive gas abilities if you're 100 feet tall with great hair. Wait, that didn't make sense did it? I guess it didn't have to, because the point is enemies will act according to the situation… and the AI is going to make sure a character never reaches for the dinner fork when it's time to have salad.
