Here's the full interview text between Eric Johnsen and the monkeys at 3DGN.
1. First off, could you tell us your name and your position at Ripcord Games?
Eric Johnsen, Producer, should I embellish?
2. What features does Spec Ops 2 feature that will lure gamers who were not fans of the original?
True first person perspective gives the player a lot more control over the Berets and makes moving them around a lot more familiar since the first person controls are now very similar to a first person shooter. Auto aiming has been removed from the game as well, allowing the player to choose their targets rather than having them chosen for you. Buddy also has better AI and with the new control interface for the Berets the player will be able to move them pretty much anywhere that they can see and have them defend areas or demolish objectives. Graphics have gone through an overhaul and multiplayer for up to 16 players straight out of the box.
3. How interactive is the world that players will be traveling in? Will they be able to raze buildings or make traps? Can players torch grasslands or poison enemy water supplies?
Bullet holes will be left in objects, shell casings will littler the ground, explosions will char the ground, objectives(vehicles, SCUD launchers, SAM sites) can be destroyed, as well as some light structures. Furthermore, almost every light source in the game can be knocked out, plunging the world into darkness, this can be done with bullets or the fragmentation from grenade blasts. No razing of villages I'm afraid, and they were forced to leave the Agent Orange at home so that grassland thing is right out, poisoning water will have to wait for Spec Ops 3.
4. Are you able to change the physical characteristics of your 'Green Beret' for more of a personalized feeling? How about Genetic Mutations for something like camouflage skin?
You can change the name and loadout of your specific ranger, furthermore they will advance in rank making them more accurate. As you Berets go up in rank the spread on their bullets becomes smaller and smaller until at the highest rank there is no spread at all, this can be particularly deadly when buddy has the M249 squad automatic weapon. Genetic mutations will be in our Green Berets of the New Jersey wastelands product where you get to kill millionaire industrialists in the toxic waste dumps of New Jersey.
5. Do I get to fly my own helicopter or try out any other neat vehicles?
No, I'm afraid not.
6. One of my favorite games was Seal Team for my old 386, and I always marveled at the ability to call in fire support such as gunboats and air-support; will that be possible in Spec Ops 2?
Again, no, the game is more about small team operations, generally sans support.
7. In Spec Ops, some people were disappointed at the lack of options to make the game more realistic by turning off health packs and having encumbrance rules. Will there be options to do this in Spec Ops 2?
Encumberance limits have been imposed upon the Berets, however health packs still remain.
8. Can players switch between first and third person viewpoints?
At your leisure.
9. Are there any NPC's that will cooperate with gamers? If so, are they under the player's control or do they act on their own volition?
There are hostages that the player will have to lead out on a couple of missions. There are civilians in almost every level however, kill enough civilians and you will fail the mission, the number you can kill before failing the mission is dependant upon the difficulty level chosen.
10. For the sadists in all of us, do we get to use your own teammates for target practice? Otherwise, we might have to endure all of their mistakes.
If buddy cops attitude, obviously administrative punishment is necessary in those situations. However we have given the player a lot more control over buddy so that you have an easier time getting him to do what you want him to do.
11. There has been a flood of tactical shooters to the market of late, what are the major attractions that will make gamers say 'ooh!' when they see Spec Ops 2 on the shelves? What will it do to beat out the upcoming tidal wave of tactical shooters?
We've enhanced our graphics engine, refined our controls(player and buddy controls), and provide a ton of weapons for the player to experiment with. Another advantage that we have is just ease of gameplay, no 3 hour planning sessions, just get in get loaded out and start killing(wow, that sounds like rednecks on patrol, huh?).
12. What differs between a tactical shooter and a simulation? What category does Spec Ops 2 fall under?
A tactical shooter in my opinion is along the lines of the marines mods for quake and such, they give up a certain amount of realism to enhance the gameplay experience. Spec Ops 2 probably falls under this category but you can't take as many hits as you can in Quake.
