13. How many multiplayer mediums will be offered? Will the Internet play be controlled with programs such as Gamespy or M-Player?
You can play via the internet or over the LAN, players will be able to set up there own servers as well. We will be working with M-Player as well doing a number of online promotions and events.
14. How many weapons are available? Can you tell me a few to drool over?
There are 19 different weapons available to choose from. The M82 .50 caliber sniper rilfe is of course high on my list of favorites, we also have the OICW which is an experimental army weapon sporting a 5.56 MM assault rifle mounted over the top of a 20 MM grenade launcher, definitely a nice weapon to have in a pinch.
15. In many games, players can tuck their squad away and run off by themselves and still complete the mission in a Rambo style. How vital will utilizing your entire squad be to survival?
I use my whole team most of the time. Many times you are going to run into missions where one Beret can't carry all the epuipment that you will need for a mission and you will need to use multiple members to accomplish the mission. I also find that it is useful to switch between squad members when I am trying to keep one alive until the end of the mission.
16. How will squad control work? Can precise orders be given to your mates, or are only basic commands available?
You will be able to tell buddy exactly where to go, have him defend specific areas and demolish objectives. The squad control is a combination between mouse command for specific actions and function keys for general squad commands.
17. What types of defenses are available to a green beret when cornered? Many monkeys will fling dung at the enemy as a sign of disrespect before they whimper and run away, can a green beret do this too?
The monkey dung function proved to be too frame rate intensive, we have decided to go with flak jackets and smoke grenades, but beyond that your defense is based primarily upon smart movement, check those corners!
18. How important will stealth be to the game? Will lighting and terrain have a major impact on stealth? Will certain weapons be available for expressly stealth purposes such as a crossbow or a silenced uzi?
I had to force myself to stop playing with silenced weapons for the purposes of testing, stealth is incredibly important, use loud weapons and you will attract every AI in the area, use silenced weapons(silenced MP5, Uzi) and you will not attract the attention of the enemy AI. Unfortunately using silenced weapons cuts down on the firepower that your squad can carry by a lot.
19. What kinds of outdoor settings will be featured? Also, what types of indoor settings can we expect in Spec Ops 2?
Just like in Spec Ops 1 we will have vast outdoor settings, unlike Spec Ops 1 we will have extensive interior environments, missile complexes, research labs, hangars, and other goodies. Outdoor environs range in style from ice plains in Antarctica to deep jungles in Thailand.
20. Can you cast magic spells or does that go against the whole 'realism' thing?
I consider the grenade launcher to be a magic spell, but that is just me, I also like the sniper rifle, it is kind of like Power Word: Kill, just noisier.
21. What types of campaigns and missions will players be embarking on?
Well to give some examples, our mission in Germany is based upon stopping German terrorist from hijacking a shipment of stinger missles out of Bremerhaven, the stages are all located on docks, ship decks and ship holds, there is also a huge crane on Germany 1 that is just a brutal sniper position when you are playing deathmatch. Thailand is kind of the other extreme, heavy jungles, hidden booby traps, all at night, very eerie, especially when a sniper suddenly opens up from out in the darkness.
22. What amazing technology is being used? You know, this is where you answer in terms that only three members of the gaming community understand.
Well the Viper engine has gone through some upgrades, we have much smoother, higher polygon models than in the original game, we support dynamic lighting from multiple light sources, real time shadows, and a new particle system for some really great explosions. We also support D3D now whereas the original game was a glide only product.
23. Will enemies distract you with brief nudity while their partners sneak up behind you? Can you do this to the enemies?
Hmm, there are civilians, no nudity though, sorry, we did get the teen rating, the enemy is also highly resistant to such ploys(I tried dropping my weapon in front of one, he shot me anyways).
24. Are any precautions being taken to ensure a stable and bug free game?
Well, we have done a lot of internal testing, which is something we weren't using on Spec Ops 1. We have put in a lot of hours on the game and feel that it is very stable and solid.
(Editor's Obtrusive Note: This is the end; I know you are as saddened by that fact as am I. For more monkey related goodness be sure to keep reading 3DGN. I'd also like to thank Eric Johnsen of Ripcord Games for enduring our "humorous questions," since the writer of this preview didn't do so. Cheap bastard.)
