Diablo 2 plans on having five character classes which will add many more play options and ways to kill monsters, not that killing monsters is fun or anything.

Paladin
The Paladin is, quite basically, a fighter for what he feels is right. Following closely the teachings of Zakarum, the Religion of Light, the paladin will vanquish his foes and do well upon friends. There are, however, people that believe the Paladin to be a mere Zealot, however many recognize his strong will and faith in the Goodness of Light. His four known skills are the Holy Aura, Shield Bash, True Blade, and Arm of God.
Holy Aura: A weapon against animated dead, the Holy Aura will throw all surrounding animated dead into confusion and disarray, at which point they can be easily disposed of with a blade.
Shield Bash: While the Paladin is a formidable opponent in battle, if he loses his weapon or it breaks, he can use this skill to use his shield as a weapon. Pushing back enemies - this can be used as a last resort.
True Blade: Using this ability, the Paladin can temporarily enchant a weapon with Holy Energy. He can then strike through even the heaviest of armor - revealing the foes vitals.
Arm of God: When using this ability, the Paladin can enchant himself with extreme quickness and strength, dealing enormous amounts of damage to his foes. However, this ability comes at a price, for while the Paladin is enchanted he is dealt amounts of damage as well.

Barbarian
Involved with any of several clans living in the outskirts of civilization in almost constant battle. Through these conditions, the Barbarian has achieved excellent battle tactics, and has an acute awareness of his surroundings. Also possessing a little Shaman in him, the Barbarian believes he can call upon the spirits of the wilderness around him to aid in his battle. The Barbarian is an overall excellent fighter, but lacks in intellect and ranged attacks. His four known skills are Stun, Retreat Attack, War Cry, and Charge.
Stun: Using this ability, the Barbarian is able to knock an opponent senseless, dealing more mental damage than physical. This exposes the enemy to further acts of violence while rendered completely helpless.
Retreat Attack: This allows the Barbarian to quickly attack, and then before the foe can retaliate, move out of harms way.
War Cry: This is the Barbarians mighty cry of battle, and strikes fear upon surrounding foes. This cry scares all but the strongest of foes to hiding.
Charge: Literally charges the victim, obliterating his defenses and dealing enormous amounts of Damage.

Soreress
The Sorceress is basically a female version of the mage from the original. Learning the secrets of the male-dominated Mage's of the East, the Sorceress has mastered the art of magic and sorcery. Highly intelligent, and acting on ethics and personal motive, the Sorceress has spells for both offensive and defensive positions, and overall very skilled in combat. And what she lacks in strength and hand to hand combat, she makes up for with spells and intellect. Her four known skills are Enchant, Frost, Dancing Sword, and Darkness.
Enchant: This will infuse another weapon with magic, making it more potent and deadly to its foes. You can tell when a weapon is enchanted by a Sorceress, for it has a magical flaming aura.
Frost: Creates a cloud of freezing, sub-zero temperatures. As well as inflicting damage, it also slows anything it comes in contact with, making the death of surrounding foes all the more quickly.
Dancing Sword: This skill materializes a gleaming sword, which begins automatically attacking surrounding foes. Darkness: Sounding like one I'm going to be using a lot, Darkness plagues all but the living dead. Mmmm, swift, satanic death... >=]
