What caused 1/3 of the worlds population to go murderously insane on Christmas Eve?

Amen's production began in the fall of 1996 when the developers started to work out the design of the game and write the story. It wasn't until 6 months after the story and design were completed that an actual line of code was written. About half way through the design months Cavedog hired a man who usually does screenplays for movies to help get Amen's story to Hollywood caliber. The story starts off on Christmas Eve of 2032 when about 1/3 of the population of Earth instantly goes insane and begins murdering randomly. Needless to say this eruption of violence causes worldwide chaos and millions die.

A few months later this event became known as the "Awakening" and organizations were formed to create "safe-zones" so the unafflicted people could live in peace. Two major safe-zones are formed, the European Resistance Organization and the North American Resistance. The afflicted people rise from their random murdering states by organizing themselves and start attacking the American safe zone with great success. The ERO sends their best commandos (guess who is one of them!) overseas to help their Yankee friends, and maybe even find the cause of this disaster. When you begin the game you still have no idea what caused the Awakening, but the best guesses are that it was a new kind of chemical that was released for some reason onto the world's population, or it may be Armageddon like the Bible prophesized.
