If a level becomes ten times the size of something you would find in Quake2 and imitates a
real world location right down to the finest details, it can no longer be called a level. It
is called an Act.

The levels in Amen: The Awakening are so huge that Cavedog didn't think the name "levels"
would really do them justice, so they chose the name "Acts". There will be 17 of these acts
and they will all be carefully detailed to resemble real world locations, and many will have
large outdoor and indoor areas kind of like Unreal (but bigger). Sometimes the team gets
almost a little too wrapped up in getting the details to perfection, e.g. One of the acts will
take place in the Pittsburgh Airport so the team actually went to the airport and took around
5 rolls of film just so they could get the architecture and all the textures to be as
authentic as possible. Other levels that have been announced will include to-scale versions
of an aircraft carrier and a New York subway system. If you are worried about becoming lost
in these gigantic levels, don't be. Cavedog claims that they are working hard to make them
easy to navigate, and levels like the airport have signs all over to help you out (remember
that whole realism thing?).
Amen will be using it's own engine that was designed with this game in mind, it is simply
titled the "Amengine". It will be state of the art, and it can do just about anything you
have seen in any 3D action game recently as well as some other things that I can't wait to try
out. The powerful physics system allows for all objects to have real momentum, and the
dynamic lighting will let you turn on/off or shoot out any light you see in the game. There
has been some talk of throwing in the team's powerful Eden editor along with the final product
which would help to create some awesome acts, but nothing has been finalized yet.
Right now the Amen team is focusing on single player, and it looks like that is going to be
where most of their time is spent. We will undoubtedly see some incredible AI to accent the
single player game, which may be good enough for us to forget about multiplayer. Cavedog will
still do multiplayer for Amen, and they claim to have some really different ideas to go along
with it, but they are still very tight lipped about what those ideas are.
